Sometimes a restaurant surprises you. Looking at the outside of Miller’s Grocery, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I knew there would be some country cooking and probably some tasty desserts, but I was not prepared for how good it turned out to be. If you find yourself visiting Nashville, Murfreesboro, or even Franklin, it is worth the drive to Christiana to check this place out.
About Miller’s Grocery
Miller’s Grocery operated as a country store for 75 years in the busy little town of Christiana before it was converted to a restaurant in 1995 by new owners. The name Miller’s was kept to honor the long-time proprietor Stanley Miller. Since then it has been featured in many publications and TV shows. Its rustic interior, antiques and local memorabilia speak to the history of the building.
We visited for lunch on a Friday afternoon. There was no wait for a table when we arrived. We were seated and had our drinks promptly. I spent quite a bit of time studying the menu before I finally decided on the fried catfish, mashed potatoes with chicken gravy, and macaroni and cheese. The food was perfect. It tasted just like someone’s grandmother made it. The catfish was crispy and light, and unlike most fired catfish I have had, it was not greasy. The mashed potatoes were the perfect mix of creamy and buttery, and the chicken gravy pushed them right over the top. The mac and cheese was gooey golden perfection.
Lunch was great, and the dessert was even better. I had Banana Pudding, but the selection of amazing looking desserts was overwhelming. I can not wait to get back and try some of the other offerings like Mississippi Mud Brownies, Carrot Cake, Reese’s Cake, and even Fruit Cobbler. All of the desserts are made from scratch by apparent masters of the southern art of baked magic.
On Friday and Saturday nights, Miller’s Grocery has live music featuring bluegrass, folk, and Americana artists. Sunday afternoon, they have a lunch buffet. While they can’t say ahead of time exactly what will be on the buffet, it always features 2 or 3 meats, 8 veggies & starches, 5 or 6 different fresh salads, a great selection of breads and 10-15 from scratch desserts. Reservations are not required unless you plan on visiting during a holiday. This place should be a part of your Nashville vacation. It is absolutely worth the drive.
